PURPOSE

This course is to prepare workers to work safely in or around confined spaces. Trainees will gain knowledge of how to identify different types of confined spaces, their hazards and the risk control measures required to eliminate or minimise risks to their health and safety. They will also develop their understanding of the responsibilities of people entering confined spaces or conducting observation duties, as well as the requirements for atmospheric testing and monitoring.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of this eLearning course trainees will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of confined spaces, and their permit notification and implementation requirements.
  • Identify control measures to eliminate, isolate, and minimise the risk of hazards in confined spaces.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and confined space testing requirements.
  • Describe the responsibilities and duties of people entering confined spaces or conducting observation duties for confined spaces.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This unit standard is intended for employees intending to work in or around confined spaces under direct supervision.

SPECIAL NOTES

Those qualified with unit standard 18426 (Confined Space Hazards) MUST be under direct supervision by someone qualified with unit standard 17599 (2 day Confined Space) at all times.

Completion of this Unit Standard provides credits towards the VHNZ New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety (Level 3)
