PURPOSE

People who attend this course are able to: assess the worksite and prepare to lift and place loads; describe the functions of critical components and equipment used for lifting, and select lifting equipment and sling load; lift and place loads with a truck loader crane; and secure the crane and prepare the truck for road transport mode, stow equipment, and complete documentation. The trainees will have met the minimum requirements under the Health and Safety Act, and your staff will have been made aware of the relevant Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) and guidelines relevant to load slinging and communicating during crane operations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Both theory and practical lessons covering the following:

  • Health and Safety legislative requirements.
  • Assess the worksite and prepare to lift and place loads
    • Worksite is inspected for existing and potential hazards in accordance with company procedures.
    • Hazards are identified, and potential hazards are identified and dealt with in accordance with company health and safety procedures.
  • Crane is checked in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations
    • Describe the functions of critical components and equipment used for lifting, and select the right lifting equipment and sling load.
  • Lift and place loads with a truck loader crane
    • Crane takes the weight, and load, equipment, and truck are assessed to ensure they are stable for the entire load lifting and placing operation.
    • Crane is positioned, stowed, and secured in accordance with crane manufacturer’s operators manual and/or company procedures.
  • Secure the crane and prepare the truck for road transport mode, stow equipment, and complete documentation.
ENTRY CRITERIA
  • It is recommended that trainees have at least three months experience working in a crane workplace before attending the course. Learners may attend the course without this experience but may be required to work for three months in a crane workplace before being awarded the unit standard.
  • Attendees must be aged 15 years or over.
PRE-REQUISITE

16617:
US 30072 – Demonstrate and apply knowledge of slinging regular loads safely

SPECIAL NOTE

To be assessed for this unit standard evidence is required of 80 hours or 40 lifts using a truck loader crane. Where possible assessment for this unit standard will be completed in the workplace.
