The aim of this course is to produce an overhead crane operator that will have the knowledge, skills, and attributes to operate an overhead crane effectively and safely in different working environments. The successful learner will be able to demonstrate the appropriate responsibilities of operating an overhead crane with emphasis on accident prevention and safe operator responsibility.
NOTE: Practical assessments must be carried out in a crane workplace or equivalent.
- Demonstrate knowledge of using a radio remote or pendant controlled gantry crane.
- Demonstrate knowledge of radio remote or pendant controlled gantry crane components, equipment, and attachments.
- Sling, lift, travel, and unload or place regular loads using a radio remote or pendant controlled gantry crane.
- Park radio remote or pendant controlled gantry crane and store equipment.
- Carry out daily and weekly operator maintenance of a radio remote or pendant controlled gantry crane.
- It is recommended that trainees have at least three months experience working in a crane workplace before attending the course. Trainees may attend the course without this experience but may be required to work for three months in a crane workplace before being awarded the unit standard.
- Attendees must be aged 15 years or over.

To be assessed for this unit standard, evidence is required of a minimum of 50 hours or 25 lifts using a gantry crane. Where possible assessment for this unit standard will be completed in the workplace.
