New Zealand has embarked on a programme of major infrastructure development, many workers are required.

This qualification aims to train people to work safely as general hands-on infrastructure work sites, and gain work skills and hands-on experience.

This programme is completed over eleven weeks full-time or up to six-months part-time (subject to VHNZ approval). Students will learn through a combination of eight days of face-to-face training, at least 286 hours work experience, and self-directed learning.

On completion trainees will be able to:

• Apply knowledge of the health, safety, and environmental requirements to work safely and responsibly with others in and infrastructure works environment.
• Follow instructions and organisational procedures to perform basic infrastructure work activities.

Trainees must complete the following compulsory unit standards for 44 credits.

COMPULSORY UNIT STANDARDS (44 Credits)

Eleven (11) weeks full-time

Students will learn through a combination of eight days face-to-face learning (broken into short sessions) and at least 286 hours work experience

Graduates will likely be employed as labourers in a broad range of sectors within the infrastructure works industry in the following contexts:

• Civil Works.
• Surfacing Operations.
• Rural Contracting.
• Underground Utilities.

This entry level qualification can lead to further training toward the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Level 3) and/or the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works Plant and Equipment Operation (Level 3) with a strand in Specialist Plant.

This qualification is for people starting out in the infrastructure works industry or those already working there without formal training. It’s suitable for new workers, such as recent school leavers, or individuals switching from another industry. As per TEC guidance, it is also targeted at those who have no previous* qualification. After completing this qualification, graduates will be able to work on infrastructure projects, assisting more experienced staff.

To be eligible to enrol in this programme, applicants must:

• Be aged 16 years or over.
• Have access to appropriate supervised work on an infrastructure worksite in New Zealand to complete the relevant work experience requirements as verified by a VHNZ approved employer or supervisor.
• Be physically fit and able to complete manual labour.
• Have access to relevant tools and equipment.
• Have access to personal protective equipment relevant to an infrastructure workplace (this will be established through pre-course notification and a pre-enrolment interview).
