PURPOSE

People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify common emergencies and pre-trip emergency planning for an outdoor activity; demonstrate initial response to emergency care management situations in the outdoors; assess and manage the patient’s condition in line with current first aid practices and cultural considerations; secure and transport the patient; and make an evacuation plan for the patient (and/or the group) from the outdoor location to outside help.

PRE-REQUISITES

US 424:
US 6400 – Manage first aid in an emergency situation

US 6400:
US 6401 – Provide first aid
US 6402 – Provide basic life support

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Practical and theory lessons covering the following topics:

  • Environmental conditions and management
  • Accident site managment
  • Patient assessment
  • CPR and basic life support
  • AED use
  • Fracture assessment and treatment
  • Spinal assessment and treatment
  • Common medical conditions.
ENTRY CRITERIA

The course requires a level of fitness to demonstrate competency for the skill being trained.
